Bhavani Devi won Gold by defeating the second-seeded Veronika Vasileva 15-10 in the senior women’s sabre individual category

Bhavani Devi, the torchbearer of Indian fencing, has made our country proud yet another time by bagging the gold medal in the Commonwealth Fencing Championship in London.

In her 10th international tournament of this year, the Indian fencer defeated second-seeded Australian Veronika Vasileva 15-10 in the senior women’s sabre individual category final on Tuesday. This win adds to her reputation of becoming the first ever Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympics.

After the win, Bhavani expressed her excitement by saying, “It was a tough final and I am glad I could add another gold medal for India this year. It has been a great journey for me this year and I would like to continue this momentum for the upcoming tournaments. The support back home has been great for me throughout.”

Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Association of India states, “This gold medal only adds to our belief that fencing in India is growing and I am confident that the day is not far away when we will have Indian fencers competing at the top international tournaments regularly, including the Olympics.”

The eight-time national champion and Arjuna Award winner believes that her wins, along with the Olympic qualification will surely inspire young sportspersons to take up this sport seriously. From training with bamboo sticks and saving from each competition to buying sports equipment, Bhavani has certainly come a long way, overcoming all struggles in her life and being a source of inspiration for us all.
