Draupadi Murmu Creates History By Becoming The First Tribal President Of India

The NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu on Thursday crossed the crucial 50 per cent mark and become the 15th President of India

The NDA’s candidate and ex-governor of Jharkhand, Draupadi Murmu scripted history by not only winning the Presidential election 2022 but also becoming the first tribal president of India. 

This year, the Presidential election kept the whole world glued throughout the months. And finally, the much-awaited result is here; Murmu defeated joint Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha declared today and became the 15th President of India. After the counting of votes of MPs in the first round, “Murmu had secured 540 votes with a value of 3,78,000 while Yashwant Sinha secured 208 votes with a value of 1,45,600,” said PC Mody, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha. 

After the second round of counting, PC Mody, Secretary Gen, Rajya Sabha said, “Ballot papers of the first 10 states were alphabetically counted. Total valid votes were 1138 with a total value of 1,49,575. Out of this, Draupadi Murmu got 809 votes valued at 1,05,299 and Yashwant Sinha secured  329 votes valued at 44,276.” Murmu inched closer to victory after the third round of counting of votes. In this round, the total number of valid votes stood at 1,333. The total value of valid votes was 1,65,664. Out of which, Draupadi Murmu got 812 votes whereas Yashwant Sinha secured 521 votes.

As soon as Murmu took the massive lead, celebrations erupted all over the country. PM Narendra Modi congratulated her, saying she has emerged as a ray of hope for citizens, especially the poor, the marginalised and the downtrodden. In a series of tweets, he wrote, “India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President! He congratulated Murmu on being elected to the top Constitutional post. Droupadi Murmu Ji’s life, her early struggles, her rich service and her exemplary success motivates each and every Indian. She has emerged as a ray of hope for our citizens, especially the poor, marginalised and the downtrodden.” 

Truly, this event marks history as the 64-year-old Murmu is the first tribal President and the second woman after Pratibha Patil to hold this position. The term of the incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind is scheduled to end on July 24. Draupadi Murmu is slated to be sworn in as the President of India on July 25, 2022.
