Friends……………………

Away from the cocoon of your home

You take those tiny steps

into an uncertain world

Heart beating fast you sit on

                                a tiny chair

The sweaty hand slips on the pencil

                                     and it breaks

A tiny hand adorned with blue bangles

                                      extends one

You look at the owner, she gives you

                              a smile

And the bonding happens

Holding hands, sharing food and

                                   biscuits

You get your first ‘friend ‘

Friends……………………

The circle widens…..

A common interest bonding them-

Books…Enid Blyton and her Secret

                                        Seven

Afternoons see them bonding over

SS badges and secret diaries

Friends…………………

The naughty teens…filled with talks

of young boys and romantic movies

At what point did you feel comfortable

discussing ‘everything ‘ under the sun??

Giggling at silly jokes and proud

                                 as peacocks

strutting round the open school grounds

Fashion, accessories and of course

                           romantic hard covers

Friends………………

The circle widens………..

You find your partners in crime

Along the long corridors of the

                        college campus

You walk with them

group under the old withered tree

and discuss movies, cricket and

                             what not

As the rain pours down

sitting on the old bench in the canteen,

sipping hot tea and singing out

the latest romantic Hindi song

Memorable trips, local eateries and

                                 movie houses

In between, your eyes and mind

take fleeting glances

at drama, poetry and Russel’s prose

The circle widening………

as you skip from one college to another

Friends……………….

The circle widens………..

Harsh realities of life settle in

Now you are more picky and choose

                                     carefully

There has to be an emotional commitment

Long talks about life over a cup of coffee

Unaware of the night creeping in

Menfolk retire, children are put to bed

But you continue sitting on the

                                      low veranda

Mindless of the mosquitoes,

in nightgowns and with no pretence

Friends…………….

The circle is fixed…….

Except a few ones,

Just names……..

A touch on the button

And they are there

Making you laugh, think and ponder

A bonding, without any meetings

Virtual friendship, a reality

A few strands of silver adorn the

                                     hairline

The circle widens no more

Each friend you gathered through the

                                             years

Has a special place in your heart

They are precious……….

There is no urgency to meet,

to prove your friendship

You accept each other, hold each other’s

                                         hand

Relaxed in each other’s presence

The veil of ego completely removed

Life has come full circle, complete

                                          with friends
