Happy Birthday to Former Captain of the Indian National Hockey Team, Sushila Chanu

Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam is an Indian field hockey player. She is a former captain of the Indian national team. Let us wish this stellar player a very happy birthday.

Sushila Chanu was born on 25 February 1992 in Imphal, Manipur. Her parents are Pukhrambam Shyamsundar, a diver, and Pukhrambam Ongbi Lata, a homemaker. Sushila Chanu had an interest in sports since her childhood. Encouraged by her uncle, she began to play hockey at the age of eleven. She subsequently got selected for the national junior hockey team.

She made her international debut at the 2008 Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup, where India won a bronze medal. Sushila Chanu rose to international attention when she led the Indian junior team to a bronze medal finish at the 2013 Junior World Cup.

Sushila Chanu made her international debut in the senior national field hockey squad after that. She played a pivotal role in the team reaching the semi-finals of the 2014–15 Women’s FIH Hockey World League. Ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sushila Chanu was named the captain of the national team. She led the team at the four-nation tournament in Australia. Under her leadership, the Indian women’s team played at the Olympics after a gap of 36 years. Sushila Chanu has a total of 150 international caps to her credit.
