Anisha Tomar is an IFS officer from New Delhi who cracked the exam in her third attempt in 2019 with an All-India Rank (AIR) 94. Like every other aspirant, Anisha started off with so much energy and confidence. But soon after the first prelim, she realised it was going to be a tough task. She was diagnosed with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) in February 2018, the period when she started preparing for her second attempt.

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) is a condition that occurs when the pressure inside the skull increases for no obvious reason. Symptoms mimic a brain tumour, but no tumour is present. They may include headaches behind the eyes, ringing in the ears in time with the heartbeat and brief episodes of blindness.

“With prelims just a few months away I felt like my dream was slipping out of my hands,” says Anisha. “Somewhere in the midst of medicines, MRIs and spinal taps, I gathered the courage to study through the pain.” That year she surprisingly cleared the prelims but failed the mains by six marks. But without getting discouraged Anisha tried again. She cleared the prelims and tried for mains. She recalls being calm and collected during the interview. She says that her 94th rank brought tears to her eyes. Anisha says, “Growth is gradual, life is unpredictable, hope is all we have.”
