Every year on 22 December, National Mathematics Day is celebrated on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan. It was introduced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Ramanujan was an Indian Mathematician who did not take any formal training though he made contributions to Number Theory, Infinite Series, Mathematical Analysis, and many more. The Distribution of the Ramanujan Award started back in 2005. It is a great initiative taken by Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA).On this occasion, various educational events happen all over India at Schools and College Universities

Neena Gupta is a professor of the Statistics and Mathematics department in Kolkata. She has become the third woman as well as the fourth Indian to get honored with the Ramanujan Award for Young Mathematicians. Till now, she has been honored by many awards like Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, The Swarna Jayanti Fellowship Award, the inaugural professor A.K. Agarwal Award, the INSA Young Scientist Award, and many more.

She is a graduate of Bethune College, Kolkata in the year 2006. She did her post-graduation in the field of Mathematics from the Indian Statistical Institute in the year 2008. She got her Ph.D. Degree in the year 2011 with a specialization in the subject of Commutative Algebra.  She is specialized in the fields like Mathematics, Commutative Algebra, Affine Algebraic Geometry. She is known for giving a counterexample for the topic of positive properties to the Special Zariski Cancellation Problem.

Many times and very often, women are stereotyped and being called for having weak math ability. They get judged. Even some people believe women are weaker in Mathematics than men. These negative stereotypes exist in our society but it is on to believe in it or not. It is ridiculous that people are judging a person just by their gender. Many women like Neena Gupta have proved this Mathematics stereotype wrong.

On this World Mathematics Day, indeed, Neena Gupta has made India very proud. She is truly an inspiration for all of us.
