Droupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of India today (July 25) at the Central Hall of Parliament

President-elect Draupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of India on Monday at the Central Hall of the Parliament.

After her triumph against Yashwant Sinha, Murnu became the second female President of the country, who not only hails from the tribal community, but also the youngest person to take oath at the highest constitutional post of India.

On Monday morning, she was accompanied by Vice-President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha M Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to the Central Hall, where she took oath as the country’s 15th President. Shortly after, she delivered her first address as the President. She said, “Becoming the country’s President is not my personal achievement, it is the achievement of every poor in India. My nomination is evidence that the poor in India can not only dream but also fulfill those dreams.” She continued by saying, “It is a coincidence that my political career began when the country was celebrating its 50th year of independence. And today, in the 75th year of independence, I have got a new responsibility.”

The NDA’s excellent choice of President sends a strong message of inclusivity and democratic values to the global community. It shows how the miracle of Indian democracy can help a girl born into a poor tribal community in rural India to make her way into Rashtrapati Bhavan. “Satisfying to me that the people who were devoid of development for years -the poor, Dalits, backward, the tribals- can see me as their reflection. My nomination has blessings of the poor behind it, it’s a reflection of the dreams & capabilities of crores of women.” This is surely a proud moment for the country and the efforts of Madam President must be laudable.
