As of April 1, 2023, India plans to implement a new gold jewelry hallmarking system, which will require all gold jewelry to be certified for its purity and authenticity. The new system aims to protect customers from buying counterfeit gold jewelry and ensure that they can identify the purity of the gold they are purchasing.

Under the new hallmarking system, all gold jewelry will be marked with a unique identification number and four symbols representing its purity levels, which will be 14 carats, 18 carats, 22 carats, and 24 carats. The hallmark will also contain information about the jeweler, the assaying center, and the date of the hallmarking.

Consumers will be able to verify the hallmarking through a mobile application, which is expected to be launched by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in the near future. By scanning the hallmark, customers can obtain information about the purity of the gold, the date of the hallmarking, and the name of the assaying center.

While the new hallmarking system is expected to bring more transparency and accountability to the gold jewelry industry, it may also pose some challenges for small-scale jewelers who may struggle to meet the requirements of the new system. However, the BIS has urged consumers to check for the hallmark before purchasing gold jewelry, to ensure that they are getting the quality and purity they pay for.
