BJP Candidate S Phangnon Konyak becomes the first woman from Nagaland to enter Rajya Sabha.

S Phangnon Konyak, the BJP candidate from Nagaland becomes the first woman from Nagaland to enter the Rajya Sabha. With this, she becomes the second woman from Nagaland to become a member of parliament in 45 years. The first was Rano M Shaiza, who became a member of Lok Sabha in 1977. Nagaland is yet to elect a woman MLA even after 58 years of statehood.

According to people familiar with the matter, no one else other than S Phangnon Konyak filed the nomination papers, and the deadline ended on Monday, 21st March.  Ms Konyak is currently the state president of BJP Mahila morcha. She holds a degree in English Literature from Delhi University and has been part of student activism and social organisations. Konyak joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017

The declaration of Konyak being the candidate for the party was made on March 18 while the Naga People’s Front (NPF), a major constituent of the ruling United Democratic Alliance, had decided on nominating one of their vice presidents Thenucho Tunyi against her on March 19. However, NPF backed out at the last moment. NPF president Dr Shurhozielie Liezietsu said the party was unable to get the support of 10 MLAs to nominate the party’s candidate although the party has a total of 25 MLAs.
