Background:

Chau was born in Hong Kong in 1961, the daughter of a small-town merchant. She had her early education at the Diocesan Girls’ School, where she was voted as a junior house captain. She passed the Hong Kong Certificate of Education test in 1978. She traveled to Sydney for additional studies after receiving her certification in 1997.

Her career began in 1997 when she formed a minority partnership with Hutchison Whampoa and Cheung Kong Holdings to form her Tom limited company. Before starting the company’s trade operations, she received $11 million in funding from these ventures. Chau transferred its company to Tom Group for $132 million in September 2003. Tom Online, a subsidiary of its parent business, was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in early 2004.
