Malayalam Cinema’s beloved actress KPAC Lalita passed away.
Let us remember this talented actress.

The brilliant actress of Malayalam Cinema KPAC Lalita (74) passed away on Tuesday, 22 February 2022. She had started her career in the KPAC Theatre collective as a stage actress and later starred in about 550 movies. Lalita has won two National Film Awards for Best Supporting Actress and four Kerala State Film Awards. She was the chairperson for the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.

Lalita was born as Maheshwari Amma in Kayamkulam, Kerala on 25 February 1948. She started learning to dance during her school days. She came to stage acting at the age of ten through the play Geethayude Bali. Later she joined KPAC (Kerala People’s Arts Club). This troupe was a prominent leftist drama troupe in Kerala. Here she was given the stage name ‘Lalita’ and later when she started acting in movies the tag KPAC was added to her name.

Her first movie was in 1970 and it was the film adaptation of the play named Koottukudumbam in which she played the same character she played in the play. In 1978 she married the noted film director Bharathan and took a break from the film field, doing only a few movies. The second era in her film career came with the 1983 movie Kattathe Kilikkoodu directed by her husband. She was awarded the National Award for the best supporting actress for the films Amaram (1991) and Shantham (2000).

She won the State Award for the best supporting actress in 1975 for the movie Neelaponman, in 1978 for the movie Aaravam, 1990 for the movie Amaram and in 1991 for the movies Kadinjool kallyanam, Godfather and Sandesham.

She has acted in about 550 Malayalam movies and a few notable Tamil movies. She has written an autobiography named ‘Kadha Tudarum

She will forever be remembered in Malayalam Cinema as one of the best actresses to ever grace the silver screen.
