Transwoman Mesmerises the Audience and Judges by her Bharatanatyam Dance

Tanvi, a transgender woman from Pathanamthitta, Kerala competed in the MG University Arts Fest in the Bharatanatyam Dance section and made history.

Tanvi Suresh, a transgender woman mesmerised the judges and the audience equally with her Bharatanatyam Dance skills at the MG University Arts Festival. By this, she made the history of being the first transgender to participate in this university arts festival. It was the first arts festival where competitions were held for also transgender groups.

23-year-old Tanvi is a first-year student of RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura. She is majoring in Bharatanatyam at the college. She had been learning the dance form since age 3. Her gurus are Bhadra and Amal. Bhadra is also a transgender woman.

Tanvi said that the tough competition she faced was not on stage but was on the path that she had to travel to reach there. She said she is happy to be competing in the arts festival with her true identity. She said that at the age of 20 she realised her identity. Even though she was scared at first, she disclosed this to her parents. Her parents were supportive and comforted her.  

Tanvi wants to be known as a dancer. She said in an interview that she wishes that in the future more competition items in arts festivals have a section for transgenders to compete.
