As we enter 2023, upskilling has become an increasingly important aspect of the workforce. With technology advancing at an exponential rate, the skills that were once in demand are becoming outdated, making it essential for professionals to upskill and stay relevant in the industry.

Upskilling refers to the process of acquiring new skills or enhancing existing ones to meet the evolving demands of the workforce. It is a crucial step for individuals who wish to remain competitive in the job market and advance their careers. Employers are also recognizing the value of upskilling their workforce, as it increases productivity and innovation.

Ms. Ashu, Founder & CEO, of Arka Leadership, says “To perform efficiently and effectively, learning new skills year after year is important to distinguish yourself and contribute relevantly.

I had a flourishing career as a chartered accountant and like many women, I too took a sabbatical to look after my home and family. There was a yearning to get back and do something for me because I had already tasted success. I have seen that at mid-management many women give up work due to family reasons and only a few get back or stick it out to climb the ladder.

Technology has given us the possibility to work from home and carry our lives in the palm of our hands. But this access can also be overwhelming since often we take on the expectations to know or do everything. To balance the different roles and yet, have a fulfilling career, has been possible for me due to committing to live life with the awareness of my inner self.

Self-awareness is an acquired skill that can be developed by taking leadership of myself. Thus, my definition of the word skill has expanded from doing an educational or informative course to stretching my boundaries constantly by living with awareness. Awakening to the inner self has been the most empowering moment because it gave me the freedom to design my life. Of course, there is a price attached to any choice, and living with the awareness called for constant alertness to my thoughts, emotions, energy, and actions.

We can grow consciously by identifying habits that we need to change, taking new courses, traveling to new places, meeting new people, learning new skills, and exploring new ways to expand our impact. In the early days of establishing myself as a leadership coach, I had to let go of my fear of failure and push myself out of my comfort zone to develop a business and focus on branding as well. It was challenging to restart after a break, and that too in a new industry. Moreover, I had been out of India for nearly a decade, so I was often grappling in the dark. My ability to be vulnerable and curious helped me tremendously because it helped me connect with people rapidly.’’
