Did your morning commute yesterday feel unusually frosty? Did you spend the entire day huddled around the heater? You weren’t alone—Melbourne just went through its coldest day in five years, as a wintry blast swept through the city.

Heavy cloud cover and persistent drizzle kept temperatures low, with Melbourne peaking at just 10.1 degrees Celsius in the early afternoon—four degrees below the usual average for this time of year. Fortunately, calm winds and slight humidity prevented the air from feeling even colder. This cold snap is due to a cloud band moving across the country, blocking the sun and trapping cold air near the surface.

Melbourne wasn’t the only place feeling the chill—Ballarat only reached a maximum of nine degrees Celsius, while Geelong managed 11 degrees Celsius.

Conditions are expected to improve slightly over the weekend, with a few showers and maximum temperatures reaching 15 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 14 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Weather forecasters have also predicted that this winter could be the warmest on record—so hopefully, we’ve experienced the worst of the icy conditions.
