Forbes has released its annual list of billionaires for 2023, with Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and MD of Reliance Industries, topping the list as the richest person in Asia and India. But what’s more notable this year is the increased presence of women on the list.

Out of the 16 new billionaires in India for 2023, three are women, according to Forbes. The top five richest women in India include Savitri Jindal, Rohiqa Cyrus Mistry, Rekha Jhunjhunwala, Vinod Rai Gupta, and Leena Tewari.

Vinod Rai Gupta and her son Anil Rai Gupta are the fourth richest family in India, with a net worth of $3.9 billion, most of which comes from their ownership of Havells India. Havells India manufactures a wide range of electrical and lighting fixtures and currently sells its products in more than 50 countries. Anil Rai Gupta, who received his education from top schools in India and the US, serves as the company’s chair and managing director.

The third woman on the list, Saroj Rani Gupta, is a self-made billionaire who co-founded APL Apollo Tubes with her late husband SK Gupta in 1986. The company, formerly known as Bihar Tubes, specializes in manufacturing steel tubes and pipes. Gupta’s net worth is estimated at $1.2 billion, and her son Sanjay Gupta currently serves as the company’s managing director.

The richest woman in India is a 73-year-old politician and former chairman of the Jindal Group, Savitri Jindal, with a net worth of $17 billion. Rohiqa Cyrus Mistry and Rekha Jhunjhunwala round out the top five richest women in India alongside Vinod Rai Gupta and Leena Tewari.
