Aryna Sabalenka Defeats Iga Swiatek to Win Madrid Open Women’s Singles Title
Aryna Sabalenka created history on Saturday by clinching the Madrid Open women’s singles title after defeating World No.1 Iga Swiatek in a thrilling three-set match. The victory came as a sweet revenge for Sabalenka, who lost to Swiatek in the final of the Stuttgart Open last month.
Sabalenka started the match as the underdog, having won only two out of seven previous encounters against Swiatek. Moreover, she had never won a set against the Polish star on clay. However, Sabalenka broke Swiatek’s serve in the first set, taking the lead. Swiatek managed to equalize in the second set, but Sabalenka came back strong in the final set, clinching the match after a fierce battle that lasted for two hours and 26 minutes.
This victory was also significant for Sabalenka as it marked her first title win on the WTA tour after her Australian Open triumph earlier this year. Although she lost the Indian Wells Masters to Elena Rybakina, Sabalenka has had an impressive season so far, racking up her 13th WTA title and her 29th victory.
Sabalenka’s victory over Swiatek is a huge boost for her ahead of the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros. It shows that she can beat top-ranked players and compete at the highest level. Sabalenka has a history of defeating top-ranked players, as she had beaten former Australian World No.1 Ash Barry to win the Madrid Open two years ago.
