Nitu Ghanghas Targets Asian Games Medal in New Weight Category
Indian boxing sensation Nitu Ghanghas is determined to clinch a medal at the Asian Games 2023 by making a strategic move to the 54 kg weight category. As the reigning world champion in the 48 kg category, Nitu aims to conquer new challenges and emerge victorious in her pursuit of glory.
The upcoming Asian Games, scheduled for September-October, will witness women boxers competing in various weight categories, including 54 kg. However, the 48 kg category is not included in the games, prompting Nitu to shift to a higher weight class.
While the logical choice would have been the 51 kg category, it is already claimed by Nikhat Zareen, a two-time world champion. Nikhat’s recent triumph in the light flyweight division at the IBA Women’s Boxing Championships secured her place in the 51 kg category for the 2023 Asian Games. Consequently, Nitu has decided to challenge herself in the 54 kg category, which remains up for grabs.
To solidify her spot in the national camp, Nitu needs to deliver an impressive performance in front of selectors, including India’s new High-Performance Director Bernard Dunne. The camp, taking place in Patiala, will assess Nitu’s skills along with those of her competitors, Divya Pawar, Sakshi Choudhary, and Preeti Pawar.
The final selection for the 54 kg category at the Asian Games will be determined by a panel comprising Dunne, Dmitry Dmitruk (India’s chief foreign coach), and Bhaskar Bhatt (head coach of the national women’s boxing team). The chosen pugilist will proudly represent India in the weight category and also participate in the first Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying event for Indian boxers.
