Indian badminton star P.V. Sindhu made a strong comeback in the Indonesia Open World Tour Super 1000 event, defeating Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in straight sets. After facing early exits in her previous two events, Sindhu triumphed over her Indonesian opponent with a score of 21-19, 21-15. This victory marked her first win against Tunjung in their last three encounters. Sindhu’s next challenge will be the formidable third seed, Tai Tzu Ying, who has a dominant record against her.
In another success for India, H S Prannoy emerged victorious against Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in a 50-minute match, securing a spot in the round of 16. Prannoy, seeded seventh, showcased his form by winning with scores of 21-16, 21-14. He now faces NG Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong in the next round.
However, it was disappointment for the Indian women’s doubles pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, as they were eliminated in the opening round by Japan’s Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi. After a hard-fought battle lasting one hour and 12 minutes, the Indian duo fell short with scores of 22-20, 12-21, 16-21.
In the upcoming matches, Commonwealth Games champion Satwiksairaj Ranikreddy and Chirag Shetty, currently ranked fifth in men’s doubles, will face Indonesia’s Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in their opening-round encounter.
