Mepung Lamgu, a 20-year-old wushu athlete, has gone out of contact since being denied a visa to participate in the Asian Games 2023 in China. This has left her family members in Arunachal Pradesh deeply concerned about her emotional state and the possibility of her taking an “extreme step.”

Mepung Lamgu is among the three wushu players from Arunachal Pradesh who were denied visas for the Hangzhou Asian Games. When the news broke, she was reportedly “crying inconsolably”. Her brother, Gandhi Lamgu, a doctor in Itanagar, had his last conversation with her, and since then, he has been unable to reach her. Her phone is switched off, causing immense worry for the family.

The trio of female wushu players from Arunachal Pradesh, including Mepung, Nyeman Wangsu, and Onilu Tega, were denied accreditation, which also functions as a visa for the Asian Games. They were scheduled to depart with the Wushu contingent but were forced to stay back due to a lack of proper clearance for their accreditation. This incident is not the first time that athletes from Arunachal Pradesh have faced such visa issues for events in China.

Mepung Lamgu, determined to become a wushu athlete, was supported by her elder brother Gandhi and their father, a police constable. She displayed exceptional talent and dedication from a young age, making her mark in wushu tournaments and international championships.
