Former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney, a prominent Republican, has voiced serious concerns about the future of American democracy if Donald Trump secures another four-year presidential term.

In an upcoming interview on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Cheney expressed skepticism about relying solely on Congress and the judicial system to curb Trump’s actions, given the former president’s clear lead in the GOP presidential nomination race, despite facing 91 felony charges related to his 2016 campaign, 2020 election loss, and mishandling of classified documents.

Cheney asserted that Trump has explicitly outlined his intentions, making it easy to foresee the steps he might take. She warned against underestimating the potential dangers, emphasizing that the current Republican-controlled Congress has been co-opted, contributing to what she perceives as a gradual descent into dictatorship in the United States.

The former congresswoman criticized newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson, accusing him of knowingly engaging in wrongful actions to please Trump. Johnson, a staunch supporter of Trump’s baseless claims of victory in the 2020 election, had led an amicus brief supporting a Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the results.

Cheney’s concerns about Johnson’s commitment to defending the Constitution were previously voiced in a podcast appearance, where she labeled him as “dangerous” for his actions in the aftermath of the 2020 election. Despite Cheney’s warnings, Johnson’s alignment with Trump’s narrative appears to persist.

Cheney’s Warning:

Liz Cheney’s apprehensions extend beyond Trump’s potential return, encompassing her worries about the Republican Party’s growing comfort with Trump and his falsehoods.

Having lost her Wyoming primary last year, largely attributed to her divergence from the party by voting to impeach Trump for his role in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, Cheney remains a vocal critic of those she sees as compromising democratic values for political gain.

As the GOP grapples with its internal dynamics, Cheney’s warnings serve as a stark reminder of the delicate state of American democracy.
