Priyanka Goswami: First Indian woman to medal in race walking

Priyanka Goswami made history in 2022 by becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walking, securing silver at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 by meeting the required standard during the Indian Open National Race walking competition in Ranchi on February 14, 2023.

Goswami’s sporting journey began in 2011, transitioning from gymnastics to athletics due to her interest in running. She achieved national recognition in 2017 by winning the Indian Race Walking Championships in Delhi with a time of 1:37:58.

Born on March 10, 1996, in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, Goswami works for the Indian Railways. In addition to her Commonwealth Games success, she has also competed in the Asian Games and various national and international championships, consistently showcasing her talent and dedication to the sport.

Under the guidance of her coach Brent Vallance, Goswami has undergone rigorous training, including a stint in Australia with top racewalkers. Her hard work and determination have led to significant improvements in her performance, including setting national records and achieving personal best times.

Goswami’s commitment to her sport is evident, as she continues to strive for excellence and aims to make her mark on the international stage.
