Avani Prashanth Leads Indian Golf Team in Australia
Avani Prashanth, a promising golfer, will captain a four-member Indian team, featuring two men and two women, participating in the prestigious Australian Masters of Amateur Championships and the Australian Amateurs this month.
The 17-year-old Avani, currently ranked in the Top-50 globally, has decided to delay her plans to turn professional. She will join Heena Kang in the women’s section, while Sandeep Yadav and Rohit will represent India in the men’s category.
The Indian team will initially compete in the Australian Masters of Amateur Championship from January 9-12 at the Southern Golf Club. Subsequently, they will participate in the Australian Amateur Championship at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club and Keybrough Golf Club from January 16 to 19.
Avani Prashanth holds the distinction of being the only Indian ranked in the Top-50 globally. She has represented India multiple times, securing victories such as the Queen Sirikit Cup. Avani achieved an impressive fourth position in the individual segment of the World Amateur Team Championships in Abu Dhabi and won a professional event in Europe while still an amateur.
Heena Kang, a golf-playing sister alongside Ceerat, topped the domestic IGU Order of Merit for 2023 with consistent performances, making her debut in representing India.
In the men’s category, Rohit, a two-time winner in India last year and the leader of the IGU Order of Merit, partners with Sandeep Yadav, a consistent performer and the winner of the 2022 All India Amateurs.
Avani expressed her honor in playing for India, emphasizing her focus on the prestigious Australian events. She highlighted her long-term goal of professional golf while considering these tournaments crucial at the moment.
Heena, coached by Laurence Brotheridge from Leeds, UK, anticipates making a mark in her international debut. Avani looks forward to a successful 2024, building on the accomplishments of the previous year.
