Diabetes, a leading cause of global deaths, is projected to increase by over 100 percent by 2030, as stated by the World Health Organization. This concerning trend calls for effective measures. Living with diabetes is challenging, as it is a chronic condition resulting from insufficient insulin production or the body’s inability to use insulin effectively. However, certain ayurvedic herbs can help control diabetes. Nutritionist Lovneet Batra has identified a few potent herbs to reduce the risk of blood sugar spikes and provided an easy method to incorporate them into your daily diet.
- Coriander seeds have been recognized for their anti-diabetic properties, stimulating insulin release from pancreatic cells. They can enhance the activity of enzymes responsible for eliminating sugar from the bloodstream, thus reducing blood sugar levels. To prepare coriander seed water, soak 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds in 100 ml of water overnight.
- Fenugreek (methi) seeds contain 4-hydroxyisoleucine, an amino acid that promotes insulin release in human pancreatic cells when glucose is present. Fenugreek seeds are also rich in fiber (50 percent), which contributes to their cholesterol-lowering effect. To make fenugreek water, add 1 teaspoon of methi seeds to 1 glass of water, boil, strain, and consume. Take it one hour before bedtime.
- Cinnamon has shown potential in lowering blood sugar levels and combating diabetes. It mimics insulin’s effects and enhances the movement of sugar from the bloodstream into cells. Additionally, it improves insulin sensitivity, making it more efficient at transporting sugar into cells. To benefit from cinnamon, warm milk slightly in a pan, add a pinch of freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon stick, and boil for 2-3 minutes. Take it one hour before bedtime.
