In response to the recent communal violence in the Rishra area, the Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government to seek assistance from other forces if the state police are “incapable” of controlling the situation. The court emphasized that the safety and security of the public must be the government’s top priority.

The court also questioned the State government on the steps being taken to maintain peace and harmony in the upcoming Hanuman Jayanti. The violence erupted when the Ram Navami procession was attacked by some radical elements, leading the police to impose prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC and block internet services in the affected area. The court advised the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government to take assistance from other forces if the cops are not able to curb the violence. The court has observed that the government must accord the security of the common people as its top priority.

The court had earlier ordered the State government to file a comprehensive report on incidents of violence in Shibpur, Howrah city, and to submit CCTV footage and video clips related to the incidents. The police were also directed to deploy adequate security measures as required.

Suvendu Adhikari, a senior BJP leader, had filed a PIL seeking an NIA investigation into the Shibpur violence and the deployment of central forces to ensure security in the area. However, the advocate-general representing the State claimed that the situation is under control.

The Calcutta High Court’s directive is significant, given the history of political violence in West Bengal, and emphasizes the need for the government to prioritize the safety and security of the public.
