Congress leader Rahul Gandhi promised free public transport for women in Karnataka from the very first day of his party’s government, during a public meeting in Mangaluru on April 27. Gandhi emphasized his party’s commitment to implementing its poll promises, including Gruha Lakshmi, Gruha Jyothi, Anna Bhagya, Yuva Bhagya, and free travel for women. Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi questioned his inability to fulfill promises, such as depositing Rs.15 lakh in everyone’s bank account, fighting corruption, and creating 2 crore jobs annually. He stated that the Congress is committed to eliminating 40% corruption, providing funds for poll promises, and sweeping the assembly elections by winning 150 seats. Gandhi further accused the BJP government of stealing power and buying MLAs using corrupt means, and alleged that corruption has been the BJP’s dharma, riddled with a number of scams, including PSI recruitment and assistant professor recruitment. Highlighting the issues of corruption and steep price rise faced by the people of Karnataka, Gandhi criticized the government’s policies, such as GST and demonetization, which adversely impacted MSMEs and pushed 40 crore people below the poverty line. Gandhi promised that if the Congress comes to power, it will fulfil its poll promises and ensure a corruption-free government in Karnataka. The event was attended by KPCC President D.K. Shivakumar, former chief minister M. Veerappa Moily, AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, and others. The promise of free public transport for women by the Congress in Karnataka is a step towards women’s empowerment and will benefit many women who face financial constraints in accessing public transport.
