Dacres Lane: Where Every Bite Tells a Story
I’m Dacres Lane, a 200-year-old street in Kolkata, India, with a rich history and a penchant for delicious food. My story is one of love, community, and the power of cuisine to bring people together.
As a street, I’ve seen it all – from sailors to office workers, from hawkers to restaurants, and from simple street food to culinary masterpieces. My name comes from Philip Milner Dacres, a British collector who frequented me in the 18th century. Over time, I’ve been renamed James Hickey Sarani, but locals still call me Dacres Lane.
I’m a short lane, nestled between Esplanade Row (East) and Waterloo Street, but my impact on Kolkata’s culinary scene is immense. I’m home to some of the city’s most iconic eateries and food stalls, each with its own unique story and flavor profile.
Chitto Babu Shop, one of my oldest establishments, has been serving mouthwatering dishes for 70 years. Their fish fry, chicken stew, and ghugni are local legends, and for good reason – they’re made with love and care, using recipes passed down through generations.
My chowmin-walla stalls are famous for their spicy noodles and chili chicken, a flavorful combination that’s both filling and delicious. Apanjan serves up delectable fish fry and other Bengali delicacies, including their signature mustard-based sauce.
Chitto Da’s stall is an institution in itself, offering a range of dishes that showcase the best of Bengali cuisine. Their chicken and mutton stew with toast is a must-try, as is their khichuri combo, which includes a flavorful mix of rice, lentils, and vegetables.
But I’m more than just food – I’m a social hub. People from all walks of life come together here, sharing stories and laughter over plates of steaming hot food. My rickety benches may not be comfortable, but they’re a testament to my humble beginnings and the warmth of my community.
I’ve had concerns about hygiene, but my vendors and restaurant owners take pride in their work, ensuring that every morsel is prepared with love and care. For those who prefer a more sanitized experience, Aaheli Xpress offers healthy food options that are both delicious and safe.
As you walk through me, you’ll discover a world of flavors and aromas that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you craving for more. From the sweet scent of freshly brewed tea to the savory aroma of sizzling street food, every sense is treated to a delight.
So come visit me, and let’s share a plate of delicious food and stories. I may not be a fancy restaurant, but I’m a culinary haven that will leave you feeling full and content. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, I invite you to experience the magic of Dacres Lane – a place where food, love, and community come together in perfect harmony,
