In recent news, the Delhi excise policy case has been making headlines, with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filing a caveat petition against K Kavitha, a former Member of Parliament from Telangana. The case revolves around alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy, which were uncovered during an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi government.

The case pertains to the period between 2012 and 2016, during which time the Delhi government
formulated a new excise policy for the city. The policy aimed to increase the revenue generated from
the sale of liquor in the city, while also streamlining the licensing process for liquor vendors.

However, it was alleged that certain irregularities had taken place during the implementation of the policy, including the granting of licenses to ineligible parties, and the flouting of rules and
regulations. Following these allegations, an investigation was launched by the Anti-Corruption
Branch, which led to the arrest of several individuals, including the son of a former Delhi minister.

The ED’s caveat petition against K Kavitha is significant as it seeks to prevent her from obtaining an
ex-parte order from the court, which could impact the ongoing investigation into the case. The petition
states that Kavitha is likely to approach the court seeking relief, and seeks to ensure that the ED is given a hearing before any such order is passed.

The Delhi excise policy case is just one example of the many instances of corruption that have
plagued India’s political system in recent years. While the government has taken steps to combat
corruption, such as the introduction of the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, much still needs to be done to
root out this menace from the system.
