Discovering God’s Presence: A Journey of Faith Beyond the Church Walls

David Fitch shares a profound story of discovery and faith during a church retreat in Michigan City, Indiana. As a consultant for a small church group, he witnessed a deep conversation unfold among the members. The church had moved to a suburb of Chicago two years earlier with a mission to serve the community. They engaged with hurting people and participated in local activities, yet frustration lingered. Matt, a concerned member, voiced his dismay, questioning why their efforts hadn’t led to more Sunday attendance or conversions. Sylvia, another member, expressed confusion over her role in helping a struggling neighbor, feeling uncertain whether her efforts were truly making a difference.

Both Matt and Sylvia’s frustrations reflected a common struggle in many churches today: a disconnect between the worship they practiced on Sundays and the mission they were called to live out during the week. However, Fitch believes this disconnect dissolves when we recognize that God’s presence is always at work in the world. The church, as a collective body, is called to be faithful to this presence, not just on Sundays, but every day.

The Bible speaks of God’s presence from the very beginning, and through Jesus, this presence is extended to all people. Fitch emphasizes that this understanding transforms how we approach both discipleship and mission. When Christians gather, whether on Sundays or in their homes, they are called to tend to God’s presence. This presence isn’t confined to the church; it extends into our neighborhoods, workplaces, and every interaction.

Fitch illustrates this with a personal story of meeting John, a man who had been homeless for years. Through simple conversations at a McDonald’s, Fitch and John experienced God’s presence, leading to reconciliation and transformation in John’s life. This story serves as a reminder that discipleship and mission are intertwined, shaping how we live out our faith in the world, always discerning and responding to God’s presence in our everyday lives.
