Kumudini Devi, a retired teacher, achieved an extraordinary milestone by becoming the first woman to clear the LLB degree and the All India Bar Association examination (AIBE) at the age of 68. Following her retirement from a long teaching career, Kumudini Devi pursued her LLB at 66 and accomplished it. Her dedication led her to excel in the AIBE on her first attempt, earning her a unique place in the world record books.

Kumudini Devi’s journey of post-retirement engagement showcased her determination. After completing her LLB, she surpassed the Bar Association examination and has now set her sights on pursuing an LLM degree and even a PhD in Law. Her son, Abhishek Tiwari, expressed immense pride in her achievements and highlighted her continuous efforts and dedication in education and beyond.

The legal field’s gender statistics reflect varying levels of women’s representation. Women constitute the majority in public sector and corporate in-house legal teams, while representation drops in senior roles. Women lawyers in law firms make up 50%, but senior roles are held by only 31% of them. The judiciary shows better representation, with 43% of judges being women and 26% in senior positions.
