Empowering Movies to Watch On International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is a day dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a day to raise awareness of gender inequality and advocate for women’s rights. One way to honor this day is by watching movies that showcase the strength and resilience of women. These movies serve as a reminder of the progress that women have made and the work that still needs to be done. In this article, we will explore six empowering female-led movies that celebrate womanhood and inspire us to strive for a more equal world.
Queen:
This movie absolutely needs to be on your list. Starring Kangana Ranaut, Queen is all about a girl from a
traditional family who sets out on a solo honeymoon after her marriage gets canceled. Approximately 10 years to the release yet it is hailed as one of the best films of all time and we agree!
English Vinglish:
A tradition-minded Indian housewife (Sridevi) enrolls in an accelerated English-language course after she finds herself unable to place a simple order in an American restaurant. English Vinglish is a 2012 Hinglish-language comedy-drama film directed and written by Gauri Shinde. Starring Sridevi as Shashi Godbole, a small business owner who enrolls in an English-speaking course to gain self-respect and put an end to her family’s mockery of her limited English skills. Shinde was inspired by her mother in creating the character of Shashi. The film also features Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou, and Priya Anand, with Amitabh Bachchan making a cameo appearance in Hindi, which was replaced by Ajith Kumar in the Tamil-dubbed version. Sridevi’s performance in English Vinglish marked her return to the film industry after a 15-year break following Judaai (1997).
Little Women
This movie starring Emma Watson and Timothe Chalamet was released in 2019 and is an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women. The story plot is about four sisters and their different ambitions in life. It gives out a message of how these women teach us to not take no for an answer and instead fight for what we want.
Hidden Figures
Even after its release in 2016, Hidden Figures is still on our list and it is truly incomplete without this masterpiece. The plot is based on the real-life story of three Black women who worked at NASA and pursued their dreams and passions in the male-dominated industry.
Wild
Our list is incomplete without this one. Reese Witherspoon has many films in her bag which are about women who won’t give up. Wild is a woman-led movie that is sure to make you
feel empowered as the story revolves around the protagonist who plays Cheryl Strayed, the real-life novice who made a 1,100-mile trek up the Pacific Crest Trail solo.
Thappad
Starring Tapsee Paannu, this movie focuses on the effects of patriarchy in India. The storyline revolves around how a husband, man, or anyone does not raise their hand on a woman. “It is just a slap, but nahi maar sakta”, is the entire peg of the movie.
