Renowned fashion designer and actor Masaba Gupta recently spoke about her creative process and views on fashion during an insightful session with Nepalese designer and sustainability champion Sanyukta Shrestha. Gupta explained that she does not sketch when designing, instead creating the world around a creation first to transport someone into a parallel world where pace and time cease to exist. She also emphasized that design is not just about garments, patterns, or fabrics, but a pure form of creative expression.

Gupta believes that fashion should prioritize comfort first and that it doesn’t have to be painful to look good. She advises upcoming fashion designers to keep asking for what they deserve, not be afraid to be bad at certain things, delegate work, and most importantly, be the best version of themselves. Gupta’s journey into fashion wasn’t a direct path, despite being the daughter of renowned actor Neena Gupta.

She revealed that she always wanted to act, but her mother advised her to pursue something where she could use her brain as well. Gupta recounted her first scene with her mother, where her acting skills were critiqued, and joked about her mother initially wondering if her new show would be like Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Despite her famous parents, Gupta dealt with the pressure of growing up in the spotlight by thinking of the world as a video game and focusing on earning points and not getting killed. She credits her mother for being her biggest critic and motivator, ensuring that she doesn’t take her opportunities for granted.
