A massive iceberg is drifting towards the shores of Newfoundland, Canada, leaving many in awe. The area, known as “Iceberg Alley,” is famous for such sightings, with most icebergs originating from Greenland’s western glaciers and the rest from Canada’s Arctic.

The iceberg’s approach to the Canadian mainland was captured in a viral one-minute video shared on a social media platform. Though iceberg sightings are common in this region due to ocean currents, the increasing frequency has raised concerns about the climate crisis and the threat to the Earth’s ice caps.

National Geographic reported an uptick in iceberg sightings this summer, based on data from a July 21 report by the US Coast Guard and International Ice Patrol Iceberg Outlook. Despite the increase, the numbers remain below the last decade’s average.

A study published in the Proceedings of the US National Academy of Sciences in 2019 revealed that Greenland’s glaciers are melting at a rate four times faster than previously estimated, highlighting the urgency of addressing climate change.

According to the US Coast Guard and International Ice Patrol, around 2,265 icebergs were spotted near the Labrador region, and 2023 is the first year since 2019 with a more severe extent of icebergs.

The abundance of icebergs in the region is a reminder of the ongoing environmental changes and the need for global efforts to mitigate climate change’s impact on our planet.
