Heating our House: Enter ‘Uncharted Territory’ in 5 Years
Our largely male-created and male-led civilization is leading us to drastic global warming with predicted devastating consequences. The recent report by the United Nations (UN) warns that global temperatures are set to break records in the next five years, surpassing the target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement of keeping global warming within 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the entire 21st century.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is a 66 percent likelihood that the annual average near-surface global temperature between 2023 and 2027 will exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one year. This alarming prediction is fueled by the continued increase in greenhouse gas emissions and the impact of the El Niño weather pattern.
The primary reasons for this frightening prediction, as highlighted by the WMO, are the human-induced climate change resulting from escalating greenhouse gas emissions and other destructive activities by our species on the Earth’s system. Additionally, the El Niño weather pattern, which typically increases global temperatures in the year after it develops, is expected to contribute to the warming in 2024.
The consequences of this drastic warming are expected to be far-reaching, affecting health, food security, water management, and the environment. The urgency to address this issue and take immediate action is evident.
As an eco-feminist, I emphasize the need to acknowledge the destructive nature of male governance, which often exhibits narrow and short-sighted vision, ultimately causing harm to the ecosphere. It is crucial to shift from this limited worldview to a radically alternative vision.
A report by a UN-appointed independent expert monitoring and investigating human rights abuses highlights the importation of arms and raw materials by the Myanmar military, exposing the detrimental effects of such decisions on human rights and the environment.
To combat these challenges, I advocate for a paradigm shift towards eco-feminism and alternative ways of thinking. We must reevaluate our priorities and adopt sustainable practices that respect and protect the environment. Only through such transformative thinking can we hope to mitigate the devastating impacts of global warming and create a better future for all.
The UN report serves as a stark reminder of the urgent action required to address the escalating global warming crisis. It is essential for individuals, communities, and governments to come together and work towards sustainable solutions that prioritize the well-being of our planet and future generations. Let us take this opportunity to reassess our values, adopt alternative visions, and pave the way for a more environmentally conscious and equitable world.
