Among the esteemed honorees were Danielle Brooks, known for her Academy Award-nominated acting and Grammy-winning singing; Halle Bailey, a six-time Grammy-nominated singer; Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for STARZ; and Nkechi Okoro Carroll, the screenwriter and showrunner of the popular series All American. Renowned actor and Grammy Award-winning rapper, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, served as the MC for the ceremony, adding to the star-studded atmosphere.
The luncheon, themed “Radiant Power,” aimed to highlight the resilience and strength of Black women in an industry often characterized by its challenges and uncertainties. It called upon Black women to reclaim their power and embrace their talents fully, despite the obstacles they may face.
Caroline Wanga, President and CEO of Essence Ventures emphasized the importance of celebrating Black women within the industry, stating ESSENCE’s commitment to uplifting those whose creativity and skill contribute to the cultural richness of entertainment. She emphasized the significance of acknowledging Black women’s achievements, which often go unrecognized by mainstream establishments.
The event was not only a celebration but also a platform for important conversations. Before the ceremony, interviews with key figures such as the founder of ESSENCE, Edward Lewis, and ESSENCE alum Gia Peppers shed light on the evolution of the event over the years and its enduring impact on Black women in Hollywood. Method Man, Joey Badass, Serayah, Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, and others graced the burgundy carpet, showcasing Black talent and camaraderie.
The highlight of the afternoon was the moving speeches delivered by the honorees. Halle Bailey expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate her achievements while reflecting on the challenges of navigating the spotlight as a Black woman. Kathryn Busby and Nkechi Okoro Carroll shared their journeys, underscoring the importance of representation and resilience in the face of adversity.
