Indian Photographer Gauri Gill Wins Tenth Prix Pictet, Receives 100,000 Swiss Francs Prize

Indian photographer Gauri Gill has been named the winner of the tenth cycle of the prestigious Prix Pictet, a global photography and sustainability award. The announcement was made at the award ceremony held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London on September 28, 2023. Gill was awarded the top prize of 100,000 Swiss Francs (approximately 90,000 GBP).

Gauri Gill’s work is known for its deep engagement with marginalized communities in the desert region of western Rajasthan and Indigenous artists in Maharashtra over more than two decades. Her winning series, titled ‘Notes from the Desert,’ captures a wide spectrum of life, from drought years to the year of a significant monsoon.

The theme for this year’s Prix Pictet was “Human,” focusing on the complexities, vulnerabilities, and strengths of the human condition. The award aimed to shed light on important global issues, inspiring meaningful conversations about shared humanity and environmental challenges.
