Sakshi Malik, the Indian wrestler who won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to listen to the plight of the country’s wrestlers regarding the ongoing protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief.
The protest began after the WFI selected wrestler Ravi Dahiya for the Tokyo Olympics despite several complaints of alleged sexual harassment against him. Wrestler Deepak Punia, who was also allegedly harassed by Dahiya, has been leading the protest, demanding the removal of the WFI chief.
Malik, who has also spoken out against the WFI chief in the past, has now added her voice to the protest. In a tweet directed at Prime Minister Modi, she urged him to listen to the grievances of the wrestlers and take action against those responsible for the harassment.
This appeal by Malik comes at a time when the Indian wrestling community is facing multiple issues, including allegations of corruption and discrimination. In such a scenario, the athletes are looking to the government and the Prime Minister to address their concerns and ensure that they receive justice.
Wrestling is a sport that has brought much pride and glory to India, with the country’s wrestlers winning numerous medals at international competitions. However, the ongoing controversy has tarnished the reputation of the sport and its governing body.
Malik’s appeal to the Prime Minister is significant as it highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action. The government must take a proactive approach in addressing the grievances of the wrestlers and ensuring that justice is served.
