India’s First Female Navy Helicopter Pilot
Sub-Lieutenant Anamika B Rajeev has made history as the first woman helicopter pilot in the Indian Navy. She completed the Helicopter Conversion Course at INS Rajali in Tamil Nadu. On June 7, she and 21 other officers received the prestigious ‘Golden Wings’ from Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar during a passing out parade.
This event also celebrated the completion of Stage I training for the 4th Basic Helicopter Conversion Course, which included three officers. Another notable graduate, Lieutenant Jamyang Tsewang from Ladakh, became the first naval officer from this Union Territory.
A Navy spokesperson emphasized that Rajeev’s achievement highlights the Navy’s commitment to gender inclusivity and creating more opportunities for women. Rajeev, along with 21 others, completed a tough 22-week training program at Indian Naval Air Squadron 561 at INS Rajali. She is now qualified to fly several types of helicopters, including the MH-60R Seahawk, Sea Kings, Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruvs, and Chetaks.
Rajeev’s achievement follows the pioneering path of Indian Air Force Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi, who was India’s first female fighter pilot, flying a MiG-21 Bison solo. Chaturvedi’s groundbreaking role marked significant progress toward gender equality in the military.
