Every year on May 29th, we commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers to acknowledge their remarkable efforts in promoting global peace. Since 1948, over two million peacekeepers have served across 71 missions, aiding nations in transitioning from conflict to harmony.

Presently, more than 76,000 peacekeepers from 120 nations are deployed in 11 missions worldwide. Despite facing numerous challenges, they tirelessly work to bring stability and tranquility to millions affected by strife.

This day pays tribute to the inaugural UN peacekeeping mission, UNTSO, established in 1948, and expresses gratitude to all peacekeepers, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace.

This year’s theme, “Fit for the Future: Building Better Together,” recognizes the pivotal role of UN Peacekeeping and supports initiatives to address future challenges effectively.

The theme underscores the importance of collaboration and innovation in adapting to evolving global conflicts.

We extend our gratitude to all partners in peace, including UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, local communities, women, youth, media professionals, troop and police-contributing countries, and member states.

To mark this occasion, the Department of Peace Operations has initiated a month-long social media campaign, sharing inspiring stories of peacekeepers and their impactful partnerships. This aims to raise awareness and garner continued support for the vital work of UN Peacekeepers worldwide.
