India’s most generous woman, married toNandan Nilekani
Rohini Nilekani is currently recognized as India’s most generous woman according to the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy Women’s List 2023. She has consistently appeared on this list for several years.
In 2022, Rohini Nilekani donated approximately Rs 120 crore, and her yearly donations increased to Rs 170 crore in 2023. Apart from being a well-known author, she actively participates in initiatives related to environmental sustainability and education. Her husband, Nandan Nilekani, is one of the co-founders of Infosys, a leading IT company with a market capitalization of Rs 619,000 crore.
Born in Mumbai, Rohini Nilekani graduated from Elphinstone College with a degree in French literature. She began her career as a journalist for a prestigious publication after graduation. Rohini and Nandan Nilekani got married shortly before Nandan founded Infosys in 1981 with six other software engineers.
According to Women’s Web, Rohini invested all she had, a total of Rs 10,000, into the business. When Infosys achieved remarkable success, she became wealthy independently of Nandan. This demonstrates how she created her own wealth by maintaining a personal stake in the business. Nandan Nilekani currently has a net worth of Rs 24,131 crore.
Rohini Nilekani oversees Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and also runs a non-profit children’s organization called Pratham Books. She is also involved in initiatives like the non-profit educational platform EkStep and the Arghyam foundation, which supports national projects for sustainable water and sanitation.
