Judy Blume Clarifies Her Support for Trans Community
Judy Blume, the author of the famous novel “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” has come forward to clarify her recent comments about fellow author J.K. Rowling’s views on gender identity. In an interview, Blume was asked about the backlash faced by Rowling, to which she responded, “I love her. I am behind her 100 percent as I watch from afar.” However, the interview had reported Blume as referring to the abuse Rowling received for speaking up in defense of women’s sex-based rights.
Blume took to Twitter to clear things up, stating that she wholly supports the trans community and empathizes with writers or individuals who have been harassed online. She added that she stands with the trans community and vehemently disagrees with anyone who does not fully support equality and acceptance for LGBTQIA+ people.
Blume has also spoken out against recent book bans in the US, some over literature that reference identity. She stated that protecting children means educating and arming them with knowledge and allowing them to read and support what they want to read.
Blume’s clarification is significant, as Rowling has been widely criticized for her views on gender identity, which have been deemed transphobic by many. Blume’s support for the trans community and her stance on allowing individuals to express themselves freely is crucial in a time when hate and discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community continue to exist.
