The recent murder of a 23-year-old house surgeon in Kerala has sparked outrage and criticism towards the state’s Health Minister Veena George. The young woman was fatally stabbed by a patient at a hospital in Kottarakara, and the minister’s response to the tragedy has drawn ire from various quarters.

In her statement, George seemingly downplayed the incident by stating that the victim was new to the field and was attacked when she fell in fear. Her insensitive comment has been met with condemnation, with some suggesting that doctors should now learn martial arts for self-defense.

Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan has criticized the police for their apparent failure to act appropriately and for bringing the violent patient to the hospital in the first place. He has also criticized the minister’s response and predicted that she would soon become known for ordering the maximum probes.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan has also voiced his concerns, pointing out that the tragic incident highlights the lack of effective leadership in the health sector in the state.

The minister’s comments have been widely criticized, with many pointing out that the victim was brutally attacked and overwhelmed by the assailant, who was reportedly a drug addict. The incident has once again highlighted the need for greater safety measures and protection for healthcare workers, particularly women.
