Arundhati Bhattacharya, born on 18 March 1956 in Kolkata to Prodyut Kumar Mukherjee and Kalyani Mukherjee, embarked on an extraordinary path Arundhati Bhattacharya never anticipated. Rising from a probationary officer to the Chairperson of the State Bank of India (SBI), Bhattacharya’s story is a testament to her determination and leadership. Her father worked as an engineer, and her mother was a homeopathy consultant.

Despite modest academic beginnings, Bhattacharya excelled at St. Xavier’s School in Bokaro Steel City and later pursued English Literature at Lady Brabourne College. She continued her education at Jadavpur University, where she learned about SBI’s entrance exams for probationary officers. Overcoming the male-dominated industry, she climbed the ladder with hard work and exceptional leadership.

In 2013, Arundhati Bhattacharya created history as the first woman to lead SBI in its 206-year history. Her tenure was marked by transformative changes, embracing technology, enhancing customer experiences, and addressing bad loans. She navigated industry challenges, reinforcing SBI’s position as India’s largest bank with a blend of traditional and modern approaches.

Her commitment extended beyond banking, advocating for financial inclusion through initiatives like the “SBI Digital Village.” Bhattacharya also played a pivotal role in policy discussions and served on various boards internationally.
