Lizzo Receives Humanitarian Award amid Legal Controversies
Lizzo was honored with the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the 2023 Black Music Action Coalition Gala, recognizing her significant contributions to charitable causes. The singer donated $250,000 to organizations such as The Marsha P. Johnson Institute, Black Girls Smile, and the Sphinx Organisation. Her award was presented by her current Big Grrrls and Big Boys dancers.
During her emotional acceptance speech, Lizzo expressed her gratitude, acknowledging the timing of the recognition. She emphasized the importance of doing the right thing, whether in the spotlight or not and vowed to continue advocating for safe spaces for plus-sized Black women.
However, the ceremony took place amidst ongoing legal battles for the singer. Just hours before the gala, Lizzo’s former tour stylist, Asha Daniels, filed a complaint against her and others involved in the production. The lawsuit alleges assault, sexual harassment, racism, and discrimination against individuals with disabilities, describing the workplace culture as “unsafe” and “sexually charged.”
These allegations add to the existing legal troubles Lizzo faces from her former tour dancers, who previously accused her of interrogating them about their weight and pressuring them into explicit acts during performances. Despite these controversies, Lizzo remains committed to her humanitarian efforts and advocacy for marginalized communities.
