Saalumarada

In a world where environmental conservation is more crucial than ever, Saalumarada Thimmakka stands as a shining inspiration. This 113-year-old woman from Karnataka, India, has dedicated her life to nurturing over 8,000 trees, earning her the title ‘Mother of Trees.’From Child Laborer to Environmental Icon

Born in Gubbi Taluk, Thimmakka’s life wasn’t easy. With no formal education, she began working as a laborer at a young age. Married at just 12, she found solace in planting trees with her husband, Sri Bikkala Chikkayya.

A Legacy of Love and Greenery

Together, they planted their first 10 ficus trees in their village. Over the years, they nurtured 400 trees, protecting them with thorny shrubs and caring for them like their own children. Even after her husband’s passing in 1991, Thimmakka continued their legacy, planting and caring for over 8,000 trees.

Thimmakka’s love for the environment extends beyond her personal efforts. She inspires younger generations to take up environmental responsibility and has even opposed projects that threaten the trees she’s planted. In 2019, she successfully saved 70-year-old trees from being cut down for a highway expansion project.

Thimmakka’s dedication to the environment has earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri.

Saalumarada Thimmakka’s story is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and love for the environment. At 113, she continues to inspire us to take action and make a difference.
