Michelle Yeoh, Malaysia’s first Oscar-winning actress, spoke during a “homecoming” press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, 18th April, and highlighted that women should never allow themselves to be put in a box.
She believes that if she had allowed herself to be categorized, she would not have worked as much. Her passion for acting has kept her going in an industry where there is no job security, and she has been fortunate enough to work with filmmakers who have allowed her to push for representation and diversity, particularly for women. Yeoh believes that boldness and courage are needed to elevate the Malaysian entertainment industry, and the movies made need to be global and not confined to a particular audience. Her recent Oscar win for her performance in the sci-fi comedy film “Everything Everywhere All At Once” has broken the glass ceiling, and she encourages others never to give up on their dreams. She hopes that her win will inspire others to push the boundaries of their careers.
During a meet-and-greet with fans at the Pavilion Mall, Yeoh was greeted by thousands of people who had come to celebrate her historic Oscar win. She has been an inspiration to many Malaysians who believe that with passion and effort, they can achieve their dreams, no matter their age, ethnicity, or gender.
