Ministry of Education and UNICEF Collaborate to Promote Climate Change Education
In a significant development, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has teamed up with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to introduce the ‘Greening Capacities Initiative.’ This partnership is a crucial element of the ministry’s comprehensive efforts to achieve the objectives outlined in the Green Education Partnership Roadmap, in preparation for the upcoming COP28 summit.
The ‘Greening Capacities Initiative’ is centered on advancing climate education and inspiring action among children and youth. Its primary aim is to provide young individuals with the knowledge and tools required to adapt to and combat the challenges posed by climate change.
At the core of this collaboration between Ministry of Education (MoE) and UNICEF lies ‘Greening Capacities,’ one of the four key pillars defined in the roadmap. The other pillars encompass ‘Greening Learning,’ ‘Greening Schools,’ and ‘Greening Communities.’
Through this strategic alliance, both organizations are set to introduce three pivotal joint programs – Educators Training, Net Zero Heroes, and the Children’s Art Competition. These programs have been meticulously designed to make a significant impact, with the overarching goal of empowering students and educators to navigate the complexities of climate change and actively contribute to a more environmentally sustainable future.
Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi, Assistant Undersecretary of the Care and Capacity Building Sector at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the ministry’s vision to realize sustainable development goals in alignment with the nation’s overarching policies and the objectives set forth in the UAE Centennial 2071 agenda. This vision has materialized in the launch of the Green Education Roadmap, which integrates sustainability and climate consciousness into the UAE’s education system, emphasizing the vital role of education in catalyzing positive change and addressing the consequences of climate change.
