Many individuals have the routine of sipping tea immediately upon waking up, but did you know that this habit might have adverse effects on your health? Drinking tea on an empty stomach can potentially harm your body, according to experts. Ayurvedic doctor Sharbari Inamdar cautions that consuming tea or coffee on an empty stomach may lead to digestion issues. Therefore, experts recommend waiting for 1 to 2 hours after waking up before indulging in your morning tea. Tea’s acidic nature can disrupt the body’s acid balance, resulting in indigestion or acidity. Some individuals may even experience bloating, particularly when consuming tea with milk in the morning.

Tea contains theophylline, a compound that can lead to dehydration and constipation. Additionally, the consumption of tea may elevate the mouth’s acidity level, potentially leading to tooth decay as mouth bacteria break down sugars.

To maintain a healthy routine, experts advise having tea one or two hours after a meal. While some people opt for coffee before a workout to boost energy and burn calories, it is not recommended to consume coffee before bedtime as it may disrupt sleep patterns. Similarly, enjoying tea with snacks in the evening is discouraged. Excessive tea consumption can result in severe health issues such as iron deficiency, heightened anxiety or stress, disrupted sleep cycles, heartburn, and other complications. It is advisable to consume tea or coffee in moderation to avoid these adverse side effects.

Experts also recommend healthier morning beverages, such as lemon juice with honey or amla juice, to boost immunity. Alternatively, drinking lukewarm water with half a teaspoon of flaxseed powder can help improve metabolism. These alternatives offer a healthier start to your day compared to tea or coffee on an empty stomach.
