No Drama, Heartfelt Honesty:Ben Affleck’s Candid Take on His Divorce from J.Lo

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez made headlines last year when they announced their separation in August, just two years after getting married. The couple, who briefly dated in the early 2000s, kept quiet about their split until recently when Affleck opened up in an interview with GQ.
Reflecting on the end of his marriage, Affleck explained, “There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no: ‘This is what happened.’” He emphasized that their breakup was more about navigating life and relationships, rather than a single dramatic event. He likened it to a couple’s therapy session, stating, “It feels vulnerable,” which is why he’s hesitant to share too many details.
Affleck also wanted to make it clear that he holds no ill feelings towards Jennifer. “I have nothing but respect,” he said, recognizing that people often search for a story or root cause behind breakups, but insisted that the reality is often much simpler than anyone might think.
Their relationship has seen ups and downs—from their initial engagement in the early 2000s to rekindling their romance in 2021, marrying in 2022, and then separating by August 2024.
In the same interview, Affleck touched on his relationship with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, especially regarding co-parenting their three kids—Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. He shared a strategy they use to help their children navigate public scrutiny: when they encounter tabloids with outrageous stories, he and Garner reassure them that such tabloids aren’t always true. “You know this isn’t always true because if it were, you would have 15 brothers or sisters or whatever the number of stories is,” he explained.
He praised Garner’s role as a co-parent, saying, “I’m really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner… we work together well.”
