Dr. Saroj Chooramani Gopal, a renowned surgeon and Padma Shri awardee, defies age norms by enrolling in a PhD program at IIT Kanpur at the age of 79.

Determined Journey: From Hunger Strikes to Medical Milestones

Born on July 25, 1944, in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Gopal’s indomitable spirit led her to pursue medicine despite family opposition. Overcoming obstacles, she completed her undergraduate program in 1966 after a determined five-day hunger strike.

In 1969, faced with the choice of specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology, societal norms dictated the path for women. Dr. Gopal challenged the status quo, fighting for a seat in general surgery traditionally reserved for men. She became the first woman in India to secure a degree in paediatric surgery in 1973.

Distinguished Career: Paving the Way in Paediatric Healthcare

Dr. Gopal’s groundbreaking career included serving as a faculty member at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University. Rising through the ranks, she became the Medical Superintendent and later the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine until 2008. Subsequently, she became the Vice Chancellor of King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, breaking barriers as the first woman to lead the institution.

A pioneer in paediatric surgery, Dr. Gopal’s impactful research led to innovations like a specialized stent for hydrocephalus and a cost-effective humidifier for infants. Her work has significantly improved accessibility to paediatric healthcare for economically disadvantaged families.

Passion for Research: Stem Cell Exploration for Spinal Nerve Regeneration

Enrolling in a PhD program at IIT Kanpur, Dr. Gopal’s research focuses on utilizing stem cells from bone marrow or abdominal lining to regenerate spinal nerves in patients with injuries or vertebral damage. Motivated by a desire to enhance the quality of life for individuals affected by spinal cord conditions, she draws inspiration from a past case involving a newborn with meningomyelocele.

Age No Barrier: IIT Kanpur Welcomes a Lifelong Learner

IIT Kanpur embraces Dr. Gopal’s extraordinary career and commitment to research, highlighting that there is no age restriction on research pursuits within the institute. Ashok Kumar, a professor at IIT Kanpur, commends Dr. Gopal’s passion and dedication, emphasizing her crucial contributions to his lab’s work.

In a world where age often limits academic pursuits, Dr. Saroj Chooramani Gopal stands as an inspiring testament to lifelong learning and a relentless pursuit of knowledge.
