Palghar Villages to Socially Boycott Families Opting for Child Marriages
Child marriages have been a customary practice in tribal communities in the rural parts of the Palghar district, leading to early pregnancies and social issues. In response, the villagers of Wada and Vikramgad talukas have taken a stand against this harmful practice by socially boycotting families who opt for child marriages.
This social pressure campaign is aimed at discouraging the custom of child marriages, which often result in malnutrition and other negative outcomes. SP Balasaheb Patil has also launched the “Jansavad Abhiyan” initiative to raise awareness about harmful social practices such as alcoholism and uncleanliness.
Many families in Khuded and Vijaynagar padas in Vikramgad taluka have taken an oath not to participate in child marriages, as the villagers band together to combat this dangerous tradition. By threatening to boycott families who engage in child marriages, the community is taking a strong stance against the practice and sending a message to others that it is not acceptable.
This initiative is particularly significant for women and girls, who are often the most vulnerable to the consequences of child marriages. With this movement gaining momentum, it is hoped that more families in the Palghar district will choose to abandon this harmful practice, ultimately leading to better outcomes for women and girls in the community.
